Is there anything that cultivates romance, thrill, and delight like the outdoors does? We don't think so. Spending time outside kindles the fires of affection like nothing else. It's a good thing, too, that outdoor date ideas are as endless as an Alaska summer day. You can find romance in a picnic, a night hike, snowshoeing, paddling a canoe, skinny dipping, hunting for hot springs, rock climbing, riding bikes, backpacking, trail running, and what else? Yeah, sure, camping. Play the cards right, romance blossoms. Even in the icky outdoors.
Since today is Valentine's Day, there's no better time to shine the spotlight on the Sexy Hotness sleeping bag by Alite Designs: a sleeping bag designed for making love while camping. In the words of Alite Designs, "Zip two or more together and get snuggling, spooning, or sporking."
Tae Kim is the designer for Alite Designs outdoor gear who makes, by his own words, "camping gear for people who hate camping." Alite's product line proves it. They have a tent that's designed to look like a Winnebago, a lightweight two-legged camping chair that packs down to the size of a "very large burrito" (we reviewed it here), and the reason you're even reading this right now, the Sexy Hotness sleeping bag.
So Happy Valentine's Day, y'all.
But this isn't about the sleeping bag as much as it's about giving a short thumbs up to Alite's approach to making and selling gear. Tae Kim is a refreshing guy to watch talk about those products. Primarily, he sees the subtle comedy in Alite Designs products yet he is straightforward about their utility. Um, hello, what's as funny yet useful as a sleeping bag that's designed to promote a little adult hanky panky? As a former designer for The North Face, he's earned the right because he also knows what he's doing when it comes to making tents, backpacks and sleeping bags that perform. He admits that if you want technical performance gear there are a number of big name companies who do that very well. But Alite makes stuff to get regular folks outside and have fun.
If you can spare a few, watch just the first five minutes of this video. It's a presentation he gave to folks working in creative fields about how he designed and launched the sleeping bag. As Kim talks about his products, he knows they're fun. He doesn't pitch you with the benefits of technical performance - he talks about what makes his product fun, and why that helps get people outside.

"We tried to break the world record for number for sleeping bags connected together. I think the [previous] record was two. We shattered it. 69 sleeping bags."
