What a Dad Wants: Nau Stainless Steel Pints

This year, I've avoided to the core penning out a gift guide for you. Everyone's doing that now. But what I will do is show you one thing that's surely going to make a fella like yours truly feel kind of special. I say that because these beauties from Nau (pronounced "now") are proof of love at first sight. A friend linked to these on Facebook today and effectively flushed this chump.

Why?: the usual. They look good, are priced for us lowly working class, and up the muchly-over-hyped green factor because they save us from using countless disposable Toby Keith Specials (Red Solo Cup! I fill you up!). There you go.

Although the manufacture of stainless steel is hardly benign, not even close, one reusable vessel in place of hundreds or thousands of disposable statistical equivalents makes a much smaller permanent mark on the planet in the long run, especially as long as there's no better alternative. Stainless steel is also 100% recyclable, putting some percentage of the greenness on your shoulders. But why else? Stackable, food-grade stainless steel anything has a pretty good shot at lively welcome party to my camp kitchen kit. Not because I'm a senseless snob, but because I've been around the block with items made from lexan, titanium, and other sorts of magical substances like unobtainium. Stainless steel is the strong, silent type of outdoor gear that works and lasts a long time.

While I've carried on about why buy stainless steel in general, there's more to tell. These handsome pints in particular come from Nau and Kleen Kanteen. Nau is a company with a fascinating story that begins in 2005 and a pile of Benjamins totaling $35 million for the startup. The outdoor clothing company went balls-to-the-wall with costly innovation, product development, multiple retail stores, a dedication to über greenness, and sharing the bounty at a rate of 5% of sales, not net profit (yep, scraped off the top before making considerations like cost of goods or payroll and benies), with several charities. It took three years before the bottom totally fell out. They whittled off 90% of the staff, closed the stores and reinvented. Today the company is in a much different place but still adhering to admirable standards of sustainability in their raw materials and processes, and producing enviable product designs.

In the end, these pints are going to make a really neat gift for the fine gentleman in your life. Or me. Want my address?
