Planet Earth is a pretty cool place. I just felt like I needed to get that out there. Did you know that today is the 40th anniversary of Earth Day? In 1970, a pretty standard-looking white male American politician (bald head and all) from Wisconsin had succeeded in founding the first observation of Earth Day. It's nothing crazy, just a day to inspire a little appreciation of this big blue ball upon which lives depend. Our strangely consumerist lives. Here are some recent pictures of the small corner of Planet Earth in which we live; the Sonoran Desert.
You Don't Have To Read This PartSo here's my minor rant. I had a leak in my sprinkler system once. So I dug a hole, found the offending pipe, fixed it and went on my merry way. And a few weeks ago we had the house painted. It's what you do when the paint is looking poor - right, it costs money but you gotta do it. And when the garage door opener stops working, do you just say, "Oh well" and leave it alone? Or, okay, I've got one that'll really hit home: you drop your iPhone in the toilet. You get it replaced right? Correct, any Rebublican or Democrat would. I can't seem to piece together how a toilet bound iPhone takes a higher priority in the American conciousness than our lone melting planet heaped with our discarded plastic containers and unwanted food. I'm just as guilty as anybody. Today, I'm going to find something to recycle. And I'll try better to make it a habit. |
