Camera: Canon 5D | Lens: EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM | Setting: f/22, 1/13th sec, ISO 100 This is at the base of the mountain where, in the late 1800s, the Chiricahua Apache Chief Cochise kept his garrison. The tall rock pinnacles and protected canyons provided Cochise and his 200-plus warriors high point advantage from which they'd could raid their enemies without warning. He was never defeated in a battle - if we don't count a short capture he endured and from which he escaped. To condense history a bit, the white Americans gave in to some of the Apaches' terms and in 1872 Cochise simply grew old and tired of fighting. He decided to live the rest of his life in peace. He died two years later in 1874, and was buried somewhere around here, and probably nobody knows where. After 130-some years, we still call this place Cochise Stronghold. Part of the sky islands, this is east of Tucson in southern Arizona.
