Mission San Francisco Borja was abandoned in 1818, but it's still a stop modern Baja back road travelers make. Today, the mission is undergoing restoration, and you simply have to go to see it some time. It's in the middle of nowhere - but what isn't in Baja? - so you get a sense of what it may have been like to live here in the early 1800s.

Look at that hand carved stone, set in perfect sequence for a rather tall staircase. It's incredible.

Brooke might be smiling in this picture, but we were both frightened at the idea when little Chloe saw the stairs, ran, and began climbing with all four stumpy limbs without any pause at all. It's a tight fit in these super shallow stairs at a steep pitch.

The caretaker of the mission was a woman about 50 years old.  Even she couldn't stand by and watch. "Cuidado," she said.

This little kid, no matter where we are, finds her own way to have fun.  That's her MO.
