You could say I'm a sentimental sucker just waiting to be separated from his money. A guy in a nasty beat up truck riding on its bump stops sniffed us out and parked at our camp here in middle-of-nowhere Baja, and whole scene went down hill fast.
"¡Buenos días! Me American frenz! I hab good theenz for you today. What you want? I hab every ting what you want here, amigos." He was short, not even 5 feet tall, wore a Detroit Red Wings jersey (right, hockey - in Mexico) and spiffied himself up with a greasy pony tail under a baseball cap that simply read, "Marijuana" on it.
Right when I jumped up to shoo him away I saw his rack of jewelry and thought about my daughter digging in the sand. And - BANG - like that I dug for my pesos and asked him to show me something that'd fit a little girl. After trying to sell me a sombrero, a t-shirt, and a poncho I finally got him to shut up and get the necklaces out.
One for me, one for Chloe, and one for Brooke. There goes 20 bucks, and here comes another lifetime of memories.
