A long time ago, like in another life all together, my brother moved to Spokane, Washington. For the summer of 1997, I lived there with him and slept on the floor of his apartment for two months because I was so broke and adventure hungry that I preferred to own a sleeping bag instead of a real bed; budget dictated I had to chose one or the other - no regrets.
Two months. Holy cow. Do you know what we did in those two months? First, he drove a blue Defender 90, so we were ready to hit the road any time, no matter what. Second, he talked me into buying a d'jembe, which is an African drum about 30" tall and it carries this thunderous, mammoth boom with the slightest tap dead-center on the head. It was awesome. So awesome that the neighbors complained about it. Funny, I still have that drum.
You know what else? We drove out to The Gorge Amphitheater the day of the Lilith Fair thinking we'd pay primo price for tickets at the box office. But instead, we got hit up right away by a guy who had two tickets for a pair of people who no-showed on him. He said, "Just give me five bucks and it's all good. They're already paid for anyway." That left us about 60 bones richer for extra Alaskan Ambers.
We also drove into British Columbia and hiked to Silver Spray cabin on the Kootenay Glacier (I love saying that part, Kootenay). We dared each other to take a skinny dip in the little pond that's right behind the cabin, and then we laughed ourselves silly sliding down a snow-covered hill that was right there. That hike, for one reason or another, still ranks as one of the best hikes I've ever done.
This summer we took our kids to Baja for two weeks. His daughter, Samantha, is 8. Tonight, I just felt like sorting photos from that trip and came up with this set I like to call, "Unco Gweg" because that's what my daughter calls him. Yes, exactly like that. Can you say it? Which, funny enough, almost comes out "uncool" instead of "uncle." But 3 year olds lie all the time anyway.
So here he is, my brother, Cool Uncle Greg doing his thing in Baja.
